PERSONALITY: On the outside, Hideo appears to be a generous, benevolent figure. With his policies bringing in tight security, low crime, a high number of people with employment and a wonderful health scheme, he proudly declares Aeon to be a paradise. He shows kindness to those who come to him and displays humility when his exploits are told. All in all, one could say he is an almost superman-like or god-like figure who could do no wrong, seen as a champion of the people almost. Indeed, with his calm, relaxed mannerisms and good humor, many at first sight assume him to be a great example of what a man should be and what a man should strive for - nothing less than a happy, accomplished man. However, this is only the very surface.
All this is merely the facade of a power-hungry tyrant. Hideo cares little for the masses that he pretends to be friends with, seeing them only as a number of people who worship the ground he stands on. He takes a great pride in leading Aeon, if only for his own belief that he rightly deserves to be the highest power in the land. He maintains a smug, arrogant disposition behind the scenes as he makes use of both his own tact and the power of Commander Vaden and the U.A.S. to keep himself in power. Power is all that he seems to live for and indeed, his only ambition is to take absolute reign of the world and become the most powerful man on the planet. For this reason, any man who knows the real Hideo could almost call him mad with power.
To some extent, this might not be completely inaccurate. While proud, he is, much like many other dictators before him, somewhat paranoid. He understands that, with the Liberation Movement, they may try to take his head at any time. To avoid the possibility of him being assassinated, he had The Spire built to act as a safe haven, protecting him and his government. However, he never lets this paranoia get in the way of his more logical, rational ideas - He is willing to let Commander Vaden take control of the U.A.S. as he knows that Vaden has much more combat experience than himself. In addition, he is willing to take advice regarding how to act. However, he also detests being told what to do and if he feels someone is urging him too strongly to do what they want, he is swift to remind them where they stand.
Deep down however, his lust for power was driven by his own powerlessness as a child - forced to grow up early and care for his sister, he deeply regrets the day she died so long ago, believing that if he had power, he could have prevented her death. When the only person he ever had to care for was taken from him in the harsh environment of the orphanage, he sought to change how the world was, deciding that he was not merely put on the earth to fit in with how it works, but to say how the world should be.
HISTORY: As a young child, Hideo was the son of a prosperous noble family, living and raised in luxury for as long as he could remember. They never had to worry about things such as money - their incredible wealth was enough to supply for them and Hideo, when not doing his studies, was one to take advantage of his luxuries. Shortly after he was born, of course, the Kurasama family was grateful to gain a young daughter, whom they named Kokoro. She was the heart of the family and, though Hideo was often something of a smart-mouthed brat to everyone save his parents, he was kind, gentle and loving towards his younger sister. So when both of their parents were killed in an accident, he was forced to grow up for both of them and take care of Kokoro.
With both children far too young to receive their inheritance, they were sent away to an orphanage on the outskirts of the capital, where they stood out immediately from the rest of the children with their fancy clothing and clean look. Almost immediately, jealousy grew in the hearts of those around him. Despite their efforts, the bullying kids of the orphanage were quick to ruin their nice clothing, ripping it up while they were asleep, forcing them to don the same ragged clothing the orphanage offered everyone else. But from there onwards, everything only went downhill - bullies would torment and abuse Hideo and Kokoro, with Hideo forced to act in her defense only to get hurt himself, whilst those running the orphanage were neglectful and failed to act in a way that could in any way solve the problems.
Perhaps as a result of the mistreatment, Kokoro eventually grew ill. Her weak constitution in the miserable orphanage led to her condition only getting worse and worse as the year wore on. Every day her older brother would comfort her and tell her of how when they were old enough, they would regain their fortune. However, despite Hideo's attempts to be there for her every waking moment, it was all in vain - one winter evening in the orphanage, she died in her sleep, leaving the earth peacefully. However, regardless, Hideo was suddenly a changed person - no longer did he smile. No longer did he laugh or grin or show any sign of amusement. He had grown cold and quiet, never batting an eyelash at anything. But deep down, there was something stirring within him. All of this could have been avoided. If only he had power.
When he came of age, he left the orphanage and used his inheritance to fund his university education. His studies took him far and suddenly, without warning, he became a huge political figure during the time of a recession - the people, seeking a stronger, more active government, rallied around his promises of jobs and security. He assembled a powerful government and all of a sudden, before anyone realized what had happened, he had become a huge figurehead in the Nation of Aeon, taking all of the power for himself and dismantling the democratic system. He set up a rule led by an iron fist and, through his own humanitarian facade and a powerful propaganda campaign, he became an almost deity-like figure amongst the people. Working with Commander Vaden, the U.A.S expanded and all was taken in under the Nation of Aeon, under Hideo's power. The power he'd wanted - the power to say how the world should be. But with this power, he had grown obsessed along the way - his ambition has become the total domination of everything.
