PERSONALITY:
She’s a serious person in general, and due to the nature of her profession, is highly disciplined and lawful. Non-lawful sorcerers usually get into trouble, and Oriphiel tends to avoid trouble if she can.
She spends much of her time perfecting her spells and performing tasks for her teacher. That doesn’t mean she’s always a hard working person however. Whoever wakes her up too early risks getting a finger bitten off – yes, bitten off. She isn’t a morning person and can be outright hostile if woken up too early.
Despite her sweet appearance, Oriphiel can be quite a handful. She’s stubborn and proud, with a deep-rooted bias towards all things magic. She dislikes people who seem to think badly of sorcerers and to some degree, warlocks, and depending on her mood, won’t even bother getting to know these people.
So long as the other person doesn’t talk badly about her, or her master or magic or anything related, she’s easy enough to get along with.
A few people, she just can’t stand though. Merchants annoy her because they always end up scamming her out of her money, she’s had some bad experiences with drows, and sprites always seem to cause mischief and actively work to find more ways to make her life difficult.
Oriphiel does occasionally fit the role of a stereotypical young girl in the sense she likes cute and mysterious things. She loves unicorns and young children because of this, though her affinity with dragons stems from something else entirely. She’d love to see a dragon sometime and perhaps even train one and keep it as a companion/guard, though she’s well aware of the fact that it’ll likely never be more than a childish fantasy.
In her heart, Oriphiel is still a little girl who enjoys dressing up in pretty clothes and getting attention and compliments. It is this aspect of her personality that usually makes people think of her as just a simple girl with no special abilities, and she’s fine with that. She’s content with letting people think she’s weak, so long as they are just regular people. Opponents or just people she’s arguing with should watch their words, because she isn’t afraid to show that just because she has a sweet look, she can’t be lethal.
Oriphiel does have a darker side to her personality. She firmly believes in justice, and if for some reason, someone gets away with a murder or a similar crime, she is perfectly willing to aid whatever assassin may be after them in order to see justice be served.
HISTORY:
Oriphiel was the second out of five children to be born into her family. She has one elder brother, one younger brother and two younger sisters, though she barely has any contact with them these days.
Her early life was full of adventures, as both her parents were wanderers and Oriphiel spent little time living in one place for a long while. During these years, everything seemed to be going fine; Her parents and siblings were happy, she was happy, and nothing seemed like it could tear them apart.
As the years passed by however, her brother grew tired of always being on the move, and left to become a knight. Her two youngest sisters wanted to live in the city and meet new people, her younger brother got himself a girlfriend during their time spent in a small village, and slowly but surely, the family began to settle into a more normal life.
Oriphiel was never a child to complain, and so when the family decided their life of adventure was over, Oriphiel reluctantly agreed to give up the freedom that came with being a wanderer.
Life in a city took a while to get used to, and Oriphiel never truly got over her sense of adventure.
Oftentimes, she’d just sneak out of the house and explore whatever part of the neighbourhood she hadn’t seen yet.
During one of these trips – this one being during sunset – she witnessed something she shouldn’t have witnessed: A murder, or, more to the point: An assassination. She tried to run, but was ultimately captured and locked away in a storage room for a few days.
The assassin was surprisingly kind to her and brought her food and water each day as he tried to talk her into keeping her mouth shut about what she’d seen. The assassin made her understand that sometimes, justice wasn’t served properly, and made her belief that he was merely doing society a favor by ridding them of their trash.
After exactly three days, he released the little girl again, convinced that she wouldn’t tell on him. And she didn’t.
Oriphiel had listened to the man’s stories, and a part of her actually agreed with him and his profession.
Her family had been overly worried and didn’t really believe her childish story of ‘getting lost for three days’ but decided not to press the subject. She was fine, after all. And she was back, so there was nothing to worry about anymore.
A few weeks after Oriphiel turned nine, she met a warlock on out on the streets, and was fascinated by his skills. For two weeks, she’d visit the woman almost daily to ask her more about magic and beg her into showing the girl some spells.
After the two weeks had passed, the woman opted to leave again; her business in the city was complete, and there was no reason to linger.
Oriphiel wasn’t happy to find out her new friend had left, and foolishly followed the woman out into the forest. Of course there was no way the trip could’ve ended well, and surely enough, Oriphiel ran into trouble not long after entering the forest.
A group of Drows had strayed from their usual habitat to hunt down a traitor who had fled into the forests. They didn’t find their old companion, and instead stumbled upon Oriphiel. She doesn’t remember much from the encounter, only that she was pursued for a while and that all of a sudden, her friend the warlock was lecturing her about running into the forest unescorted. At first the woman wanted to bring Oriphiel back home, but quickly changed her mind on that during the trip back. Oriphiel was curious and highly interested in magic, and she was still young enough to teach… plus the woman could use some company.
And so, Oriphiel was taken in by the warlock and lived and trained with her for almost ten years. Now, she often takes care of city-business, such as selling potions or buying certain items for her master.
She has some contact with her family again, though much has changed in ten years, and she has a lot of fixing to do.
