PERSONALITY:
Kiley, despite her disability, is very much a lively young girl. She enjoys many things normal teenagers enjoy, such as sports and hanging out with her friends.
Because of all her time spent at a boarding school, she has no trouble dealing with larger groups of people, seeing as she shared a dorm with seven other girls for almost five years.
Although she’s a very nice person once you get to know her, upon first meeting her you might not realize it. She’s often sarcastic and her jokes are often funny at other people’s expense. This is only when dealing with other girls however, and guys she has known for a long period of time.
Having grown up with next to no male figures in her life, Kiley has precious little experience dealing with the opposite sex. She is a sucker for romance novels and sometimes forgets the stories are made up, and that not all men are noble, chivalrous heroes.
She acts nothing like the women in the stories however, and happily flirts with whoever she finds interesting, or with her friends just to annoy them. It’s mostly just for fun though, and when someone responds seriously to her antics, she often gets intimidated and backs off.
Despite her somewhat odd personality, she’s a real sweetheart to those she considers her friends, and is willing to do almost anything to cheer them up, even cracking jokes at her own expense.
Those who aren’t her friends enjoy fewer courtesies. She loves being right about things and, unless she really likes you, she’ll happily argue her point until you give in. She can be quite stubborn, but is also a bit of a coward in the sense that, once an argument gets too serious and someone gets genuinely angry, she’s quick to back down to avoid getting someone mad at her.
Kiley loves her parents, but rarely speaks of them and sometimes even tells people she’s an orphan.
Reason for this is that Kiley’s parents both work for the ‘bad side’ of the war, and sadly most people are judgmental enough to treat her badly because of something her parents are doing. At least, that’s what she thinks, and that’s the reason she keeps it to herself.
For several years, Kiley has been working on getting over an incident that almost paralyzed her from the waist down.
She still sometimes struggles with muscle weakness and stiff legs however, and many people tend to treat her like a delicate flower because of it. She appreciates the concern, but when people go too far and actually start treating her like a little girl, she can get angry fast.
The incident left her terrified of guns and the sound of gunfire, or other loud noises.
HISTORY:
Kiley was born as both the first and last child of the Harris household, a fairly well-off family with a big house and lots of land. The couple had no children after her, and so Kiley was treated like a little princess – always getting whatever toy she wanted, her own horse, lots of clothing when she grew older.
The first few years of her life were happy and fulfilling. Kiley had lots of room to play – both inside and outside, lots of toys and other things she might’ve wanted.
The only thing that was missing was a group of friends. Kiley was – up until the age of twelve – homeschooled.
Kiley was only eight years old when the war broke out, the war that would affect every single person in the world eventually.
At first her parents weren’t too concerned. They lived far from any capital cities, the only other people nearby were people from a small village.
For almost three years, nothing really changed about the girls’ life. She was still homeschooled, she was still treated like a queen and life was generally good.
Shortly after her twelfth birthday however, that changed. The war had spread all over the nation, and not even the nearby village nor Kiley’s home was spared. On the way to a safe zone, both Kiley and a few others were caught in a rain of bullets. Kiley was one of the two people fortunate enough to survive, but not without a scratch; Kiley was shot in the back, and suffered from nerve damage, making it impossible for her to walk.
Her father believed the North was to blame for it all, for the war, for his destroyed home, for his now disabled daughter. And so he joined the Southern Army as a regular soldier, after much persuasion, his wife joined the South too, as a medic.
Kiley was sent off to a boarding school in an area – up until that point – unaffected by the war. There, she received extensive treatment to aid in her recovery. She’d undergo physical therapy on a daily base, and after nearly five years, she has improved quite a bit.
She still suffers from muscle weakness and requires tools to help her move across longer distances. Whether or not she’ll ever fully recover isn’t certain, by now, the war has also spread to the area near the school, and they’re not certain how much longer they’ll be able to stay. Kiley for now has been forced to give up on her rehabilitation.
