Rei heard Lahad sigh, and smiled as he did so. She felt the same herself, but didn't let such an emotion be known. However, she could feel her muscles relaxing, and she felt all too ready to drop to the floor, spent and tired, just to sleep in her clothes where she fell. And sleep she would, as soon as she had led her new friend through the pitch black house, put some lights on, and perhaps made him some food. He deserved that after everything he'd been through that day. And to think, they'd met hours before at a school, and were now some miles away in her house. The things war did to people. The things necessity did to people...
She waited a moment before she moved, letting her eyes become accustomed to the gloom. She knew the house like the back of her hand, and could probably find her way through it even blind. However, she had never needed to take someone with her, someone with no knowledge of the places layout, and she'd rather him not fall and injure himself now, after all they'd been through. Anyway, she quite liked the guy, and she'd rather not have to see him hurt.
She heard the sound of clanking metal, and figured that Lahad had dropped his heavy weapon against the wall, no doubt glad to be rid of it. She followed suite, dropping the rapid fire weapon she'd been carrying for him, letting it go with a pained 'owch', the tight strap having cut into her breasts and shoulders. Taking a moment to massage where it had rubbed, she then unclipped her bokken and let it fall. Unarmed, she instantly felt safer, instantly felt more at home. She had to pin her eyes open in order to fight off sleep. 'Soon', she told herself, 'soon.'
Waiting a few more moments, she finally decided her eyes were as adjusted as they were going to be, and reaching out into the dark, she felt for Lahand's arms, trailed her hands down his sleeves, and finally took his hand right hand in hers. Giving him a little tug, she meant the motion was for him to start moving. “Come on. I think it is about time we got some rest, don't you?” Her words were soft, unassuming, yet determined. She sounded like she knew what she was doing, and that her advice was certainly sound.
Keeping a hold of him, she began walking, trailing him behind her, feeling his rough skin press against her soft hands. She didn't mind the feeling, as it let her know the both were still alive, that she wasn't dreaming. She walked with purpose, through two dark rooms, into a long hallway, when finally they reached the stairs, two flights going up to the attic, the place where she stored all the lights, the sleep wear and the food. Stopping, she decided it might be best to give the man notice about what lay before them.
“We are about to have to go up some stairs. There will be two flights, and at the top, that is where we can rest, and where you will be able to see again. Be careful as we climb, all right? If you fell, it would be terrible.”
